Having a look at teaser trailers
So, here is the new Alice in Wonderland teaser trailer. It is 1 minute 39 seconds long which is a conventional length of time for a teaser.
Narrative
In terms of narrative, not a lot about the story was revealed at all. She falls through a hole, drinks out of a bottle, she shrinks and then there are shots of her with lots of funny looking characters. Nothing really is explained. There is an overhead voice, which turns out to be the voice of the Mad Hatter, who only really explains that this is a different world she has fallen into in which things are 'a land full of wonder...mystery...and danger.' The longest shot is one of a close up of the Mad Hatter, the main character who is Johnny Depp. This is probably because he is famous and so attracts an audience by making them think the film must be good if such an actor is in it.
Average length of shots: They vary so much; from less than one second to about 5 seconds. The purpose of having varying take times is probably to enhance the chaos and complicated sense of the film.
Diegetic and Non-diegetic sounds
The whole trailer runs with music overhead. It starts very magical and pretty, until she falls down the whole. As she falls, there is a big sound that comes in with the directors name. There is jumpy and fast music on string instruments to suggest chaos with get higher and higher until the introduction of 'Har'ing vocalists which sounds rather scary. Then when she begins walking around the world and the characters are shown briefly, the music calms down and sounds a lot like the beginning again. It makes everything seem mysterious and magical. The narrator comes in overhead and makes it all even more mysterious, and a little bit scary and creepy. As soon as he says 'Danger...', the music gets louder again with trumpets and the roar of a bird monster flying overhead. He carries on talking 'You need to be as mad as a hatter, which luckily... I am.' Theres a screaming type noise thats rather fast and gets higher until Johnny Depps name comes in. Drums, strings, trumpets; a whole mesh of noise... And then the first diegetic speech without any music. Then that same loud noise comes again, growing more intense. He goes a crazy laugh with no noise and then the noise is repeated. Bash. It finishes.
Lighting
The lighting varies with people. With Alice, she usually has a orangey or bluey light, with the Mad Hatter, he has lots of varying colours and so on. I am given the impression of evilness within some characters due to the dark lighting that surrounds them when they are in shot.
